In case you didn't notice while driving down I-49, the speedway on the north edge of Butler is being refurbished and set for reopening for races later this fall.

Growing up, I lived 10 miles from a county speedway dirt track. I still remember hearing the stock cars from our yard. But that was in wide open flat farmland. Old 71 Speedway is 12.7 miles (as the crow flies) from the DSS, and with all the rolling hills, and tree cover inbetween, it's doubtful that we will hear it from the DSS.

Once they start a regular racing schedule, it's one more thing to do in Butler on cloudy evenings.

Ha! My husband's company owned a super-modified sprint car, and we raced at Lakeside Speedway every week. Also raced out east (the I-70 speedway?), and up in Knoxville, IA. I drove that car around the track a few times, but back in those days, they usually wanted me only to help give out the trophy at the end of the night!
