Hi Team,This is Mihir Daiya. I recently registered / paid for s club (ASKC) membership. I have never visited Powell Observatory, however I want to with kids who are visiting me from Portland, OR.I also own a Celestron NexStar HD 8 Telescope and want to take a deep dive into the astronomy world which is what motivated me to become a member of ASKC club. That being said, I have three questions:1.When is the Powell Observatory open? Weekdays + Weekends?  As a member, when can I visit the observatory?2.Can I come anytime to the observatory with my personal telescope at one of your Dark Sky sites? Is there a specific time window or can come anytime after dark?3.When I visit the Powell Observatory, do I need to take an appointment for using the on-site telescope?

Your answers will be highly appreciated, and will be very helpful for a new member like me to understand the whole process.

Yes, our much-appreciated Observatory Director (David Young) can answer your questions regarding our club observatory. But let me first welcome you to our club.

I can mention that the open fields next to Powell Observatory are open 24/7 to club members to bring your telescope for private observing. This is a wonderfully safe and secure area in Louis-Young city park> It is a fairly dark but safe place to be out with your telescope throughout the night. No problems.

Most importantly I also want to invite you and family to our Monthly Club Member Starparties which generally attract 25 - 40 club members who like to get together with their personal telescopes for pleasant evenings under the stars. Our next event is planned for Friday August 27. To receive email announcements, please send me your email address so that you can be added to our starparty announcement system.

Let me add my own welcome to Dave Hudgins. We are so glad you decided to join us in appreciating and enjoying the night sky. Dave answered your questions, but I would also recommend reading the monthly club newsletter, the Cosmic Messenger, to find more information about the Dark Sky Site, etc. Also on this website, under the Members tab on along the top menu bar, choose Documents then ASKC Information for Members. You may find some of the information you haven't thought to ask in those documents.
