Photon Fix & Attempt at Comet NEOWISE at Powell Obs, 7/17-18

Is this an ASKC members-only event or are you allowing the public? I ask because we have gotten a couple of public inquiries about Powell being open for the comet on the 17th.

I would be concerned if it is open to the public as I don't know how you or anyone would be able to control the crowd.

ASKC only. Still thinking Friday night. If others attempt to do a public night on Saturday I could probably assist, but that was not my original intent.

One more thought about Powell this Friday. I reserved Powell for myself last Friday and both baseball field lights were on until I left close to midnight. Also, it appears that they've installed new LED lights on the field closest to the observatory and they were brighter than ever. I can guarantee that if those lights are on you won't see the comet. I'm not even sure if you could see the moon.

And of course, there were probably about 6 people still using the field when I left. Grrrr.

I would sure like to come down to see the comet, but you are correct, Rick -- if there are ballfield lights on, we couldn't see as good. Comet NEOWISE will be in the SW sky.

Several of us were at Powell on Sunday. David looked up the location coordinates on Stellarium and gave them to me. It was in the NW right over the ball fields. No chance of seeing it naked eye but I got it in my FOV on the first slew after keying in the coordinates. There were ball field lights and low opaque clouds on the horizon, but it was there. No tail could be seen and the green color I normally expect was washed out so it looked like a fuzzy star. I had everyone at Powell look at it to confirm my conclusion.

It could not be seen naked eye or with binos. I tried. My eight inch aperture did the job.

I've never used Stellarium in this way so I need to get some training from David.

There was a person from the public using the parking lot that was looking to the SW because that was where his smart phone app located it. My conclusion is don't trust smart phone apps.

I may be there Friday. The ball field lights on Sunday were annoying. I could see everything in the sky I wanted to see, but the ball field lights provided backlighting near the ground just like automobiles provide when they drive by Powell, except the ball field lights don't go away.

Good morning. My husband and I had hoped to drive the hour plus from Leavenworth to Louisburg this evening to see the comet (and some of you that we haven't seen in months). But if there's no chance of seeing the comet, I'm not sure it's work over two hours of driving time. Is there someone we can contact at the City or the Parks & Rec Department who can confirm if there are games scheduled this evening?

I just called the Louisburg Parks & Rec office and they said they were not any ball games scheduled for Lewis-Young Park tonight.

If you want to contact them the number is 913-837-1910.

Even with the ball park lights on the comet is visible from Powell. Marcia saw it with the unaided eye Wednesday night and I took a series of rather pathetic photos. Easy to see in binoculars.

Was anyone able to get a look at C/2020 F3 Neowise last night?

I found it in binoculars at 9:20 and then shot a zillion crappy photos. Needed a tracking mount. All of my images show trailing. I was shooting a 400 mm lens for about 10 seconds. I was able to show a lot of people where it was by shooting  a laser through the viewfinder. That shot a green beam into the sky that could be followed right to the comet. We also had a nice ISS pass. We had about even numbers of well behaved public and members with most of the public in the parking lot north of the road. A nice night.
