At the June General Meeting we learned of a $3.5-million plan to relocate Powell Observatory to land generously offered to us by the Cedar Cove Feline Conservatory. That prompted me to ask myself about the Powell Observatory Relocation Fund whose progress towards its $60,000 goal is reported in the Cosmic Messenger. What does the $60,000 cover?

Rick can say for sure, but originally the $60K to be raised by the club was to prove to possible donors that we were serious about this project, and that the club, as a whole, was behind it. Why would a donor give thousands of dollars if the club's own members were not pitching in something, and backing our own project?

That money will be used for costs involved in actually creating a facility. That includes, land acquisition, engineering and designing a new facility, building it, building a road to get to it, bringing in utilities, and the cost of professional find raising money.

Hi Rich,

David and Scott have already answered your question pretty well, but to throw a bit more into the pile here I go.

One of the potential large donors told us when we started this project that in effect, the ASKC membership should show that we also support the project financially and a target amount of $60,000 was established.

Over the time it has taken us to get this far, some of this money has been spent on a property title search with the earlier effort with Circle Grove School and then the recent Hartsook fundraising case study. No money has bee spent unless it was directly required by the relocation project.

If you have more questions, please let me know.

Scott is correct about the $60,000 the ASKC is raising on its own. It is showing potential donors that were are serious. The outside donors will have to help with the larger amounts required, for such things as land acquisition, road building, the new observatory, the outdoor amphitheater, etc.

Thanks for your replies, gentlemen. It seems to me that our approach makes perfect sense.

I just saw that Jackie replied, too. I should have addressed the group as "gentlemen and lady." :)
