Comet watching brought a pretty nice crowd to Powell Observatory last evening. I didn't count, but my guess is there were 30 or more folks present. It was good to see some club members in person! It looked like the clouds might spoil the show, but eventually C /2020 F3 showed up low over the baseball diamonds. Thankfully, there were no games scheduled, so the lights were off.
It was pretty difficult to spot the comet with the naked eye. At least it was for me. But after you found the dim streak of light it was easier to find again. Many of the crowd said they could see it without optical aid. Last night if you weren't looking for it you likely would not have seen it.
Here's a simple grab shot with my 55mm Nikon zoom lens on a tripod. You can see the top of one of the ball diamond lights. The two bright stars to the upper left of the comet are Alkaphrah (mag 4.15) and Talitha (mag 3.1) in Ursa Major.
