Last Friday I opened Powell for a private group. I found a 2 foot long copper head in the hallway against the west wall. I took it out to the field to the west. I was there today to spread bug killer and killed the weeds in the driveway. I checked every room and closet and didn't see any sign that it or it's relatives had returned. I left the snake wrangling rake in the classroom just in case. That's three times in 36 years so it's not a common occurrence to find a snake inside the observatory. I'm sure the relocation process was traumatic for the snake so it my stay away. Still, it would be a good idea not to just go rushing in. snake.jpg snake.jpg

Thanks David. From the picture it is a fine specimen. Thanks for relocating.

It must have been attracted by mice who I'm sure vacated the premises for the time being.

That's a beautifully colored snake! Good thing he wasn't too aggressive!
About 10 years ago, I was opening the gates at my Land of Oz Observatory, and as I was pushing the gate through the high grass, I just happened to see (only by chance!!) a good sized snake coiled up in a tight coil right under the gate I was pushing. I jumped back and then opened the other side of the gate.
I then cautiously approached the snake. He never moved, and never even lifted his head, BUT, he was a BIG (over 5 feet) Timber Rattler!
It was early in the morning, and he might have been cold & stiff, and he could have just eaten, but at any rate he was not alert. I gave him wide berth and proceeded through the gate onto my property.
When I left about an hour and a half later, after mowing, he was gone. Wish I'd had a camera or smart phone with me!!
