Comet Neowise

Seen and photographed it this morning. I couldn't make it out naked-eye, but easy in 10x50 binos.

I tried Tuesday morning from a rural area but I didn't see it. Low clouds, starting too late, and not knowing exactly where to look. This morning I started looking, taking pictures at 4:15am and I shot it till 5:10am. Easy in 7x50s but never did see it naked eye. Posted to my Facebook page. Search for Mike Myer on Facebook.Mike

I arrived at Powell around 4:30 and found Denise Moser already set up in the parking lot with her binoculars and a camera mounted on tripods. The comet was easy to find in my 10x50 binoculars being about 10 degrees above the horizon and down and slightly to the right of beta Auriga. It was only naked eye visible with averted vision but as it rose and my eyes became dark adapted it was easy to pick out directly. The nucleus and tail were both quite visible. Denise and I continued to observe for about an hour. My last unaided sighting was at 5:09 and by 5:20 I could no longer find it in my binoculars. I am glad that I made the effort to get up and see it.

Good to hear! And if you were at the parking lot north of the observatory, you had a perfect wide open NE horizon!

Yes, it was worth the early rise and longish drive! Thanks to John for the idea that gave me the gumption to get up and go.

I got a couple of pictures, but I continue to have some issues with focus. For something different, I'm attaching the panoramic view. Perhaps I should crop it. For most of you, it is obviously Venus above Aldebaran on the right edge. The comet is a little to the left of lower center--below both Capella and the less bright Menkalinan but kind of between them down but closer to Menkalinan. (kind of where the band of blue starts above the whitish area above the red of the twilight colors, if that makes any sense.)

Also, the comet was also visible with binoculars (not naked eye) here in midtown atop the UMKC parking structure Fri and Sun am (At the very NE corner, just left of the close cell tower). However, it is a soupier sky with an ugly gray- brown background sky, even mid-twighlight, so my pictures suck (not to mention not in focus), so I won't bore you with it.

I went out in Lee's Summit this morning, July 13th at 4:30AM. Skies were not entirely clear with thin translucent clouds. The comet was easy to find with 9x60 binos to the lower left of Capella, about 4 fingers from the horizon. Very bright, some detail visible in the nucleus, with distinct striations in the tail. The tail extended about 60% of the FOV in my binos. At 4:43AM, the comet became naked eye visible with averted vision, and at 4:47AM it became naked eye with direct vision, especially between cloud layers. Nucleus and tail remained visible in binos until blue sky appeared after about 5:14AM. Very impressive! Worth going out early. John
